Never forget Orunmila

Orunmila said it is a matter of running helter-skelter

Ifa, I say it is a matter of being troubled.

The children of the Rat were running helter-skelter

They were troubled

I inquired from them why they were running helter-skelter and troubled

The children of the Rat said it was because of children

Orunmila asked them, ‘Would you know devotion?”

What are we asking for, the Rat answered

What is Baba Akeyo saying?

Orunmila asked that the children of the Rat may reproduce

They prepared an Ifa portion for the children of the Rat

They were having children

Orunmila said again, it is a matter of running helter-skelter

Ifa, I say it is a matter of being troubled.

The children of the Fish were running helter-skelter

They were troubled

I asked them why they were running helter-skelter and troubled

The children of the Fish said it was because of children

Orunmila asked them, ‘Would you children of the Fish be devoted?”

What are we asking for, the Fish replied

What is this man saying?

Orunmila prepared an Ifa portion for the children of the Fish

Let them produce, Orunmila had instructed

Orunmila said it is a matter of running helter-skelter

I say it is a matter of being troubled.

The children of the Bird were running helter-skelter

They were troubled

I inquired from them why they were running helter-skelter and troubled

The children of the Bird said it was because they have no children

Orunmila asked them, ‘Would you be devoted?”

What are we asking for, the Bird answered

What is Baba Akeyo saying?

They prepared an Ifa portion for the children of the Bird

He asked them to be reproducing

Orunmila said it is a matter of running helter-skelter

Ifa, I say it is a matter of being troubled.

The children of the Animal were running helter-skelter

They were troubled

I inquired from them why they were running helter-skelter and troubled

The children of the Animal said it was because of children

Orunmila asked them, ‘Would the children of Animals be devoted?”

What are we bargaining for and what is Baba Akeyo saying?

They also said Orunmila asked them to prepare Ifa portion for the children of Animal

Such as they may reproduce

Orunmila said it is a matter of running helter-skelter

Ifa, I say it is a matter of being troubled.

The children of Man were running helter-skelter

They were troubled

I inquired from them why they were running helter-skelter and troubled

The children of Man said it was because of children

Orunmila asked them, ‘Would you know devotion?”

Tell him you would, Esu quietly said to the children of Man

“We would observe devotion’ the children of Man chorused

Orunmila prepared an Ifa portion for the children of Man

He asked them to be reproducing

In sixteen years time, Orunmila said I will come back to see how you all have fared

On the expiration of the sixteen years

The children of Rat had many children

The children of Fish were numberless

The children of Birds were uncountable

Man had filled the whole earth

There was no exception with the children of the Animal

They also had reproduced and the house has been filled

But when Orunmila was coming back

He called on the children of Rat first

The children of the rat could not recognize him again

they were spilling sand on him

Yet he tarried with them for sixteen days

On leaving their house he left for the house of Fish

He got there the children of Fish were splashing water on Orunmila

on the sixteenth day he left their house

He entered the house of the child of Bird

The children of Bird could not recognize Baba again

They defecated on his cloth

on the sixteenth day he left their house

He got to the house of the children of Animal

the situation was not different, they too had forgotten Orunmila

They were also biting him

On the sixteenth day he left

He then entered into the house of Man

As he was spotted far off

They were saying Aboru boye Bab, you are welcome

You are welcome

Orunmila thought within himself

These ones are in search of knowledge

Before a twinkle of an eye

Mats were spread on the ground in different colors

Plates of food were laid and served

Cold water rested in many jugs

Hope you had a nice journey Baba

Come and eat,

You, son of Man

Henceforth, use rats as the irari of your own children

If your child is sick

come and sacrifice rats

the child will become healthy

The children of Fish likewise

Use them for your source of food

And as the irari of your own children

He said once I demand for a bird

you should catch them and sacrifice them immediately

And if I request for an animal

Never look back

Go and find animal

All the children of rat, fish, bird and animal

They are the ones you should use as irari of your own children

Orunmila said, I entered the house of the Rat

They cannot identify who I am again

I entered into the house of the Fish

They don’t know me again

I entered the house of the Bird

They could not recognize me again

The children of Animal cannot recognize me also

But you, children of Man knows me well

What then would be the irari of an Akapo?

The children of the rat. They are the irari of Akapo. The children of rat.

What then would be the irari of an Akapo?

The children of the fish. They are the irari of Akapo. The children of fish.

What then would be the irari of an Akapo?

The children of the bird. They are the irari of Akapo. The children of the bird.

What then would be the irari of an Akapo?

The children of animals. They are the irari of Akapo. The children of animals.

-Holy Odu Eguntan Rete

-This ese Ifa guides us clearly in why it is good to be devoted. To know Orunmila and to greet him well. To make sacrifice and keep committed. So many would like to say that devotion is a christian concept but it is not. Surely, there is great reward in devotion. So much so, that our children will not forget Orunmila, even years later. They too will know him and greet him well. When we give offerings of rat, fish, bird or animal, this ese Ifa should give us great comfort into why and how it works. Some have said this verse gives humans dominion over the others, in regard to ebo. The next time you make ebo, remember, oh children of man, the importance of each and how far it will carry you to give what Baba requests. Remember to stay devoted. It is the devotion that passes on to our children and takes us to the next levels. It was Esu who told the children of Man what to say. So let us always greet Esu. The response (to Orunmila’s question) from the children of Man was, ‘we will observe devotion.” So, I ask you……..are you?
